Gastric leaks that are medically known as perforations occur when there are holes in the stomach wall. This condition can be caused by several things, ranging from peptic ulcers to surgical complications.
Gastric organs located on the left side of the upper abdomen have the task of receiving food from the esophagus. This organ will secrete stomach acid and enzymes that function to digest food. When the stomach leak, of course its function in digesting food will be disrupted.
Gastric leaks generally cause symptoms in the form of severe abdominal pain, which is accompanied by chest pain, nausea, vomiting, bulging stomach, tightness and difficulty defecating. In more severe conditions, this condition can also be accompanied by vomiting and bloody bowel movements.
Causes Gastric Leaks
The following are some conditions that can cause the stomach to leak:
1. Gastric ulcer
Gastric leaking can occur due to a wound on the inner surface of the stomach wall, otherwise known as a stomach ulcer. This condition is usually characterized by severe abdominal pain that appears suddenly, and feels like a sharp object pierced.
2. Stomach injury
Injury to the abdominal area due to puncture, gunfire, or hard impact can cause leakage in the stomach organs. This condition can occur in victims of traffic accidents, shootings, or acts of violence.
3. Swallowing foreign matter or chemicals
Foreign objects and alkaline chemicals or strong acids that are ingested can cause injury to the upper digestive tract, including the stomach.
Foreign objects that can hurt the stomach such as toothpicks, glass fragments, chicken bones and fish bones. As for chemicals, generally from home cleaning products, such as detergents, toilet cleaners, and bathroom floor cleaners.
4. Gastric cancer
Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers and is very risky to cause gastric leak. Initial symptoms that are usually felt are nausea and vomiting, difficulty swallowing, no appetite, vomiting blood, bloody chapter, and drastic weight loss.
5. Medical procedures
Every medical procedure has its own risks. Although the chances are very small, some medical procedures, such as gastroscopy, gastrectomy surgery, bariatric surgery, and surgical removal of gastric polyps, are at risk of causing the stomach to leak. This condition is more likely to occur, if before surgery you have a history of stomach disease.
Management of Leaking Hulls
Gastric leaks are classified as an emergency condition that requires immediate treatment. To overcome the stomach leak, the doctor will first improve the general condition of the patient by installing an oxygen hose, infusion and tools to monitor blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, and oxygen levels in the body.
Then the doctor will give medication to relieve pain and other symptoms experienced by patients, drugs to stop the production of stomach acid, and antibiotics to prevent infection.
After that, the surgeon will immediately perform an emergency surgery. The operation aims to overcome the causes of gastric leak and improve gastric leakage. If the stomach is not treated immediately, the contents of the stomach will come out into the abdominal cavity and cause peritonitis. If left unchecked, this condition can be fatal.
